Our next edition will take place on Monday 30 April at 20h in Grand Cafe De Burcht (Burgsteeg 14, 2312 JS Leiden). Join us for an evening of informal astronomy and great beer. Frans Snik and Carmen Toribio will tell us all about some of the coolest telescopes in the world. Frans Snik is a staff astronomer at Leiden Observatory, and develops innovative instrumentation to observe the atmospheres of exoplanets with the world’s largest telescopes, including the Very Large Telescope and the Extremely Large Telescope. In addition, he pursues spin-offs of his astronomical technology, for instance to measure pollution in our own atmosphere. In this talk, Frans will provide and overview of the history and future of optical telescopes, and some of the technology developed in his group to make such telescopes even more powerful.
Carmen Toribio is a mathematician and radio astronomer working at the Allegro group in Leiden Observatory. Her work consists on providing help to other astronomers in using the Atacama Large Millimiter Array (ALMA) in Chile. Before moving to Leiden, she worked for three years in Dwingeloo (Drenthe) for the LOFAR telescope. In her talk, she will explain how do astronomers detect radio waves using the so many different and beautiful antennas around the globe. All ages and backgrounds welcome. The entry is free and no reservation is needed. We start at 20h but recommend you arrive early to save a seat and grab a drink. And of course, beside the talks we will have fun games where you can win cool science prizes. More info: check out www.astronomyontap.nl.
