Kirtan ๑ The Sound of Yoga ๑ Navratri Edition Kirtan is a very different kind of music. Based on ancient chants, it has the ability to quiet the mind if listened to with intention. Everyone experiences Kirtan differently, you can think of it as a sing-along. A Kirtan concert is not your typical concert either. Everyone sits on the floor, and the wallah (leader) sings the mantra, and the audience sings it back. As you sing with each other you experience a deep connection with the musicians, the other audience members and yourself. And when the music stops, your mind is quiet. Because Kirtan has roots in India, many of the songs are sung in Sanskrit. It can be so powerful singing in an ancient, holy language. You will be completely immersed in the sound, with no words to distract the mind.
The magic of the chants carry you within. This upcoming Kirtan is during the Navratri Festival (or the festival of 9 nights). The beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn are considered to be important junctions of climatic and solar influences within the Hindu tradition. These two periods are taken as sacred opportunities for the worship of the divine mother. For 9 nights the Devi Shakti (feminine spirit) is worshipped through prayers, chants, meditation, fasting and other spiritual practices. During this Spring Navratri edition we will share several chants in honour of the various Hindu goddesses to honour the feminine spirit. It is also the time of the year to turn inward and nurture, rejuvenate and replenish your soul. Dana (on guitar) & Marieke (on harmonium) will lead this Kirtan.
Both practitioners of the yogic path of devotion (Bhakti yoga). Bhakti yoga is the yoga of the heart and includes singing to an object of devotion using mantra and Kirtan to connect with the heart space.
