We are very pleased to announce a presentation by Geir Johnsen on his cutting edge research on arctic ecology and new optical techniques in the context of the pilot project Art&Ocean at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art. Johnsen has a unique cross-disciplinary approach, as he explains it himself in an interview with Gemini : “I’m kind of like a cuckoo chick,” Johnsen said, laughing. “I am an ecologist interested in photo (light) biology, even though some people think of me as an engineer. But I am trying to merge enabling technology with the natural sciences.” https://geminiresearchnews.com/2016/03/dark-lords-werewolves-and-indiana-jones-in-the-polar-night/ Johnsen is professor in marine biology at the Centre of Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems (AMOS) at Department of Biology (NTNU), Prof II at University Centre on Svalbard (UNIS), and is one of the founding partners in a NTNU spin-off company Ecotone.
Johnsen's research areas are marine ecology and biodiversity, bio-optics, photosynthesis, pigment chemotaxonomy, underwater robotics and sensor development for in situ identification, and mapping and monitoring of bio-geo-chemical objects of interest in the marine environment. He has published more than 115 papers in international scientific journals and been a co-editor for the books: "Ecosystem Barents Sea" (Tapir Academic Press) "Phytoplankton pigments: Updates on Characterization, Chemotaxonomy and Applications in Oceanography" (Cambridge University Press, 2011). A list of recent published articles and books can be found here: https://www.ntnu.edu/employees/geir.johnsen Johnsen is one of the driving forces and contributors to the travelling exhibition Polar Night which presents photographies from the field excursions in the the arctic polar night.
